Blue Mountain Shelter to Tray Mountain Shelter

Day 7 – 05 Oct 2014 (8.1 miles)

Ranger Joe got an early start hoping to make as far as possible to set up for getting into Dick’s Creek Gap early on Monday morning.  4Be left out a little afterwards and we left a short while later.

Our initial plan was to make it to Sassafras Gap and stay there for the night.  Early on we decided that with the climbs ahead of us that was too ambitious.

We met up with 4Be at Unicoi Gap, and walked up on Ranger Joe eating lunch on top of Rich Mountain.  We stoped and ate there at an incredible overlook.  As we were packing up to leave from there 4Be showed up.

The drop through Indian Grave Gap and the up to the top of Tray Mountain were uneventful, but did reinforce our decision to stop at Tray Mountain Shelter.

When we arrived at the shelter, there were 2 couples there.  Camelot & Gwedelan (?) where decided if there were going to sleep in the shelter or not.  Smoke Stack & Mother Nature had their tents set up and were preparing dinner.

Bling & I setup in the shelter and headed down to get water and then to start prepping dinner.  While we were 4Be showed up, then Buttercup and her dog Tumbles (Thumbilina). We had Market Pasta Puttanesca from Packit Gourmet.

As we were cleaning up and the sun was setting Sandals (a SoBo thru hiker) showed up and joined us in the shelter for the night.  He brought word from Ranger Joe that he was staying at Sassafras Gap.

The Appalachian Trail summits Tray Mountain at 4.95 miles, reaching the angular, rocky mountaintop. Views from the lofty, 4429 summit extend to the north and the south.
