Hogpen Gap to Blue Mountain Shelter

Day 6 – 04 Oct 2014 (11.9 miles)

Samma dropped Bling & I off at Hogpen Gap at 9AM Saturday morning.  She hiked the first 1.5 miles with us.

From Low Gap to the base of the climb up to the Blue Mountain Shelter the walk is along an old CCC road and has some awesome rock work where the road crosses through draws.  It is a fairly level and easy walk along the old road bed most of the way.

We met Tripper along the trail headed south to Neel’s Gap.  With that, he will have completed the AT in Georgia.

We made it to the shelter around 4PM and started getting water and making dinner.  We had Fiesta Frijoles from Hawk Vittles for dinner.  While we were making dinner 4Be (Larry), and Ranger Joe showed up .

Bling & I both stayed in the shelter.  It was extremely cold.  We heard a report that it was 29º with wind gusts of 35-40 mph.  Needless to say my 20º bag had issues holding up to the weather.

We started hiking around 3pm. We knew we wouldn t make it to the Low Gap shelter so we started looking for an established campsite.
